BrandonClayScouting.com Player Evaluations

Date: May 23, 2015

Location: Nike EYBL (Minneapolis, Minn.)

Carter is one of the nation’s premier forwards. He has the size, skill to be impactful on the interior and facing up as well. Carter is shaping up to be an impact recruit at the next level.

Carter is playing with more toughness physically and mentally than what I have seen in the past. He affects the game on both ends of the floor with equal amounts of impact. He is turning over either shoulder to score and swatting shots on the defensive end. He plays with poise and balance and uses shot fakes to leverage the defense away from the bucket.

Location: Hoopsgiving (Roswell, Ga.)

Carter was as aggressive as I have seen him at Hoopsgiving. He received multiple post touches and took advantage of them along with his size advantage over the opposing team. He displayed the ability to make hook shots with either hand or face up to the basket to either knock down the jumper or put the ball on the deck to get to the rim. He also rebounds his position well and will start a number of fast breaks with his shot-blocking and rebounding ability

Carter showed flashes of greatness in this camp. He even stretched out his range as he shot faked and finished at the bucket off of a direct drive. There are concerns about his body language. We will need to watch to see if he is really engaged or if that is his natural demeanor.

Carter showed a legitimate touch around the basket. He hit the soft bank shot at 8 feet. He shot the 3-pointer and trail 17 footer as well.

Carter consistently finished in the paint with his right hand. He was effective in the screen and roll situations. He took a 17 foot jump shot that didn’t fall. Carter has bounce in his legs but he isn’t explosive in that regard.

Carter puts us in the mind of Howard Thompkins (GA-08) who played at UGA and for a few years in the NBA. Carter’s frame and skill set compares well to Thompkins, however Carter is not as polished at a young age as Thompkins was. Although he is primarily an interior player, he does possess a nice handle on the perimeter and has range to the arc with his feet set. His specialty at this moment resides in his ability to rebound the basketball and also his natural feel for the game around the basket. He’s still a half-second slow on his reaction time, but we see this as nothing more than an immature game that will continue to develop as he gets older.

Carter has a lot of similarities to former Georgia star Trey Thompkins. We view him as a fourth ball handler with the ability to be impactful on the interior and the outside over time. He’s a little more interior oriented than Thompkins was at the same stage in his career taking multiple right-hand half hooks during the event, Carter should be a top 5-10 prospect at his position before it’s said and done.
