Coach Jay-Bee Bethea wrapped another season with All-Ohio Black on the EYBL circuit. This year marked another year of grooming underclassmen while playing against ELITE upperclassmen. As coach Bethea says, “We have spent two years of growing the program back to full strength. Next year we will be back to where we are supposed to be.”

Here is a look back on the 2015 edition of the All-Ohio organization.

Kelsey Mitchell 150

The No. 1 player in 2014 Kelsey Mitchell

The most heralded player from the All Ohio program, Kelsey Mitchell, showed exactly why she was the top player in the class of 2014. The 5-8 guard set the world ablaze while playing for coach Kevin McGuff at The Ohio State University. She became the first freshman in the history of women’s college basketball to lead the nation in scoring. She scored over 800 points last season to a tune of 24.9 points per game. She also set a NCAA single-season record by hitting 127 three-pointers. She was the unanimous B1G Freshman of the Year and was named B1G Co-Player of the Year.

Fellow Buckeye teammate, Alexa Hart, also made a big impact as a freshman last season. She broke the school record for most blocks in one season with 129 while averaging 12.2 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. She was named to the B1G All-Freshman Team for her efforts. Hart was a 4-star prospect and ranked No. 21 in the class of 2014 per ProspectsNation.com. She earned the reputation as the nation’s premier shot-blocker after signature performances at the Midwest Showdown in 2012 and the #PSBSummerInvite in 2013. Her talent translated quickly to the college game.

Individual Standouts

Valencia-Myers-USA 150

Class of 2018 Valencia Myers

Coach Bethea mentioned class of 2018 6-foot-3 posts Valencia Myers and Bexley Wallace as the two standout performers this season. Both entered the ProspectsNation.com Elite 60 with Myers cracking the top ten at No. 8 and Wallace at No. 11. It was what both accomplished in Colorado Springs, Colo., this May that still has Bethea bragging. “Both (Myers and Wallace) made the USA U16 National Team. We are proud of that accomplishment and what it means for All-Ohio” said Bethea.

Next Up

Cierra Hooks 150

Class of 2017 wing Cierra Hooks

Bethea mentions two class of 2017 prospects that are poised to take center stage next season. “I expect Cee-Cee (Cierra) Hooks to break out next year. She is a terrific play-maker” says Bethea

ProspectsNation.com evaluators agree with the All-Ohio coach’s assessment of the 5-8 wing from Dayton, Ohio. Hooks is the No. 62 ranked prospect in her class in the #PNElite100. The left-handed wing is an athletic slasher who showed extended range on her jumper this July.

Bethea also mentioned 6-4 center Tylar Bennett of Redford, Mich., as a critical piece to All Ohio’s future success. Bennett suffered an injury this summer and was unable to compete during the evaluation periods. As Bethea explained, “Tylar was our leader and when she went down it hurt us a lot. Having her return next year should help us back to the top of the circuit.”

A big piece of All-Ohio’s game plan this year was the shooting exploits of 6-1 forward Samari Mowbry of Mason, Ohio. Coach Bethea had high praise for the junior by saying, “She was our version of Trevor Ariza. She is a big wing who can shoot the 3-pointer. We will count on her a lot next year.”

Future

Cam Clegg

Class of 2018 point guard Camree’ Clegg

Coach Bethea’s voice lit up when asked about which prospects are in the pipeline for his Black team. He first mentioned point guard Camree’ Clegg of Westland, Mich., in the class of 2018. As Bethea explained, “We moved Cam up to our top team from the younger group this July. She is talented and ready to make plays as the lead guard next summer.”

Clegg has been a standout performer at the Elite Basketball Academy in the past year. She earned a 3.5 star rating while competing and could see that rating climb in future evaluations.

Coach Bethea is equally excited about 2019 prospects Jordan Horston of Columbus, Ohio, and Maliya Perry of Pickerington, Ohio. Both were top performers for his talented 9th grade team. He also has high hopes for a new addition to the program in Cashmere Smith. Bethea says, “Although Smith is raw right now, she could turn into one of the better players to come through our program.
