Gates might lack elite level explosiveness but he possesses the unique combination of skill and shooting ability. Couple that with his willingness not to do too much on either end and you have a prospect capable of having a nice college career. Gates went 4-9 from the field here but finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.

Gates can be summed up in the two performances that he had here in the two days I watched him. He had a superb game versus Florida Air Academy where he flew around the lane rebounding and hitting jumpers. He finished with 16 points and 9 rebounds. On the next night matched up versus Ben Simmons he finished 3 points on 1-8 shooting. He is a swing forward who can exploit match-ups that are his favor.

Gates played more around the perimeter here today. He can really shoot the basketball especially with his feet set. In that way he is an elite specialist. Position wise can he be effective like Shane Battier is for the Heat?

Gates put up a double-double here tonight with 23 points and 11 rebounds. He is a combo forward in many senses because he has the length to rebound and defend the interior. However, he also has the ball skill to create with the ball in his hands. He has range to 3, but it is not super quick as he has to take a step into his shot to get it off. Nevertheless, he will be one of the Southeast’s most prized recruits next season.
